A Song of Spring
The arrival of spring brings with it a cautious sense of renewal this year. With the increasing availability of the coronavirus vaccine and a presidential administration valuing public health, science, honesty, and compassion, one might begin to imagine our lives transforming into something recognizable.
Looking around my yard — just beginning to awaken from a long winter — I found myself reflecting upon a few lines from “Auguries of Innocence” by the mystical (and arguably iconoclastic) Romantic poet William Blake:
To See a World in a Grain of Sand
And Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour
Although it might be some time before those of us acting responsibly begin our gradual reemergence into the world, we might find consolation and hope in living signs of the infinite. When spending time in a backyard, garden, or park, look around. You might find yourself surprised by how close eternity sits.
