Spooky season has arrived, and October is shaping up to be a busy and fun month for this writer.

On Monday, October 7, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., I’ll be sitting down with the fine folks at the Bronx County Historical Society for a virtual book talk on my biography of H. P. Lovecraft during his New York years, Midnight Rambles: H. P. Lovecraft in Gotham. Several Bronx-based institutions assisted with my research while I was writing this book, and the conversation will touch upon Lovecraft’s own experiences in the borough. A great way to start one’s Halloween month!

Closer to the holiday on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., I’ll be teaching a class at the Brooklyn Brainery–H. P. Lovecraft, Movies, and Halloween–discussing the horror master’s cinematic legacy and how films influenced his own imagination and fiction. Everyone will leave with a shortlist of television episodes and movies perfect for the season. (If you plan to make a day of it, several of Lovecraft’s favorite spots in Kings County, Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, sit within walking distance.) As both a student and an instructor, I always have a wonderful time at the Brainery.

I hope that you’ll add one of these events to your personal macabre celebrations.

Happy Halloween!
