Art, Drinks, and Conversation: An Evening at Virile

On Small Business Saturday, November 25, 2017, Virile Barber & Shop invited me to discuss Left Bank of the Hudson with guests over drinks and food (courtesy of Wurstbar) in downtown Jersey City.

Before cable news and social media, people visited barbershops to trade gossip, debate politics, and discuss events of the day. This tradition is alive and well at Virile, a cozy barbershop with a retro style and friendly, talented barbers. Simply put, Virile was the perfect place for a book event.

After my introductory spiel and reading, the crowd engaged in a lively discussion. We focused on art and literature in contemporary American culture. As a writer and speaker, I find hearing the audience’s thoughts to be the most enthralling and stimulating feature of any event.

Emmy Feyeux, senior barber at Virile, organized the evening and ensured that everyone had a great time. Kirk Howle, a friend and talented artist, designed the flyer for our event. Kirk presented Emmy with a framed print as a gift for all her hard work and hospitality.

At closing time, the audience mingled, sipped, and chatted. No one wanted the conversation to end. Proof of a great night. Jersey City (and everywhere in America) needs more places like Virile.
